The Big Innovation Centre is a new initiative of The Work Foundation and Lancaster University. By working across government, public and private sectors and higher education institutions the Centre aims to make the UK a global innovation hub.
The Big Innovation Centre identity needed to reflect these ambitions and feel authoritative yet contemporary and dynamic. The circular form within the logo references the Centre's five main areas of research and represents a hub where people and ideas can come together. In support, we created a library of illustrations and photography for each of the five work streams, designed to be used in their various communications pieces including their reports, email marketing and website.
The website we designed for them needed to be at the heart of technological innovation, integrating rich media, social media feeds and links with data visualisation modules, an events portal, reports area and blog.
The structure of the site is designed around a 'liquid layout' meaning that the pages are able to restructure themselves depending on whether the site is being viewed on a desktop computer, tablet or mobile. Content is presented in such a way as to allow for easy cross-linking between relevant areas which encourages the browse-ability of the site.
The design of the site needed to present the wealth of content in a logical and intuitive manner, but never compromising search engine friendliness. It is underpinned by a powerful content management system (CMS) which allows the administrators a high degree of control over a rich library of different page templates.
